Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Apex need a public school foundation?
We believe every community can benefit from a public school foundation. A public school foundation enhances students’ educational experiences, provides support to the public education system and engages the community in education. The APSF recognizes the impact of strong schools on our community’s economic growth and development. We believe that all community members, whether guardians of school-aged children or not, should be invested in and engaged with our schools.
How is APSF different from local PTAs?
While there are some key differences between a public school foundation and PTAs, we are supportive and complementary of each other, and find that a community is best-served when both types of organizations are present as they are able to address different aspects of students’ needs. The APSF encourages all community members to join their local PTA.
Impact: PTA funding benefits the students and teachers of a specific school. The APSF supports all WCPSS schools with an Apex mailing address.
Funding: PTAs often fund projects that go beyond curriculum (e.g. playground equipment, school beautification, picnic tables for outdoor lunch, cultural arts programs, hospitality for teachers, etc.) The APSF focuses on funding long-term projects that support the WCPSS strategic plan and have a curricular tie-in.
Advocacy: PTAs often advocate for education policy that impacts students. The APSF is a non-advocacy organization.
Which schools are eligible for APSF teacher grants?
Any Wake County public school with an Apex mailing address is eligible for grants funding from the APSF. Currently, that includes 10 elementary schools, 5 middle schools and 3 high schools. View the full list of schools.
In addition to teacher grants, the APSF administers and funds several programs including Health & Wellness webinars that are free to the general public and a teacher discount program offering local discounts to all staff at APSF-supported schools.
Why doesn’t APSF provide funding to Apex Charter Schools?
Working with a singular umbrella organization (WCPSS) allows us to focus on programming that meets the needs of a large population of students while also following a singular set of policies, guidelines and rules.
How does the APSF spend donated funds?
As a volunteer driven organization with no paid staff or office space, the APSF has minimal overhead expenses and the vast majority of APSF income goes toward program expenses. APSF activities are made possible through generous contributions and donations from local residents, businesses, organizations, and corporations. The total dollar amount allocated to programs is dependent on the annual budget.
Are APSF donations tax deductible?
Yes, the APSF has received tax-exempt status under Section 501(C)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Accordingly, all donations are tax-deductible to the extent allowable by law.
