Stopping the 'Summer Slide' without Sacrificing Summer Fun

Finding the perfect balance between a carefree, relaxing summer and making sure your kids are invested in summer learning and ready for the upcoming school year is a challenge! As a parent, you don't want your child to enter the next grade unprepared, but you also don't want to spend the summer serving as an academic taskmaster. So what's a concerned parent to do this summer? It is possible for your K-12 child to enjoy a fun summer and enter next year prepared. Educational Connections Founder Ann Dolin, M.Ed., will show you how! In this workshop for Apex Schools, you will learn how to:

  • Plan interactive, age-appropriate summer activities so fun that your child won't even realize they're learning

  • Help your student fill in learning gaps by incorporating (online and offline) math, reading, and writing into your family's summer routine

  • Set "micro goals" with your student to uncover what they want to learn this summer

  • Ask powerful questions to open the lines of communication to avoid the parent/child conflict around academics

  • Ensure your child has the right mindset and support system to overcome challenges in the next grade level

Back to School: How to Help Your Child Manage Stress & Anxiety and Thrive this School Year

Transitioning back to school in a time of physical distancing and masks is hard. It can be stressful and anxiety provoking for students and parents alike. With schools opening up for in-person learning again, it is increasingly important for parents and guardians to be attuned to their child’s mental health and wellness. Parents and guardians can help children by planning the transition, making strong connections, and re-establishing routines. With the right support and access to local resources, children can adjust, make new friends, learn new things, and thrive socially and emotionally. Dr. Laura Politte will discuss the broad impact of COVID-19 on mental health, how to recognize the signs of anxiety, and share strategies parents can easily use to support their children’s mental health as they transition back to school.
